Dirty Hippie?

So, it wouldn't be a blog about hippies if we never talked about B.O. I love being a hippie,but I don't love B.O. I also don't like horrible cancer from stuffing all of my pores full of aluminum either. So what's a girl to do?

I've tried all different kinds of natural deodorants, and I've always felt like they just leave you smelly. I understand they aren't antiperspirant, but I can't handle smelly. Luckily for me, a friend gave me a recipe that she said she liked, and, after one use, I LOVED IT. For real. Not kidding at all when I say it works better than any conventional deodorant I've ever had! No, it isn't antiperspirant, but you NEVER smell.

And so, I share with you my secret.

There are 3 ingredients.

4 if you're feeling fancy.

It's simply a paste of 1 part baking soda, 1 part cornstarch, and enough coconut oil to make a paste. I used 1/4 c of each powder, and around 5 or 6 tablespoons of oil (REALLY approximate. You just keep adding until it seems right.)



Coconut oil melts at very low temperatures, so the stirring should let it all mix together well (my oil had melted and re-solidified a few times, but it still worked fine, just a little lumpy to begin with.) It should be about the consistency of mashed potatoes. You can also add essential oil if it suits your fancy. I used jasmine last time, and lavender this time. Both are delightful. Plain is also just fine.

It should make you so happy, you look like this.

That's a honey, cinnamon, and nutmeg mask. Delightful. Smells fantastic. People will want to lick your face.

And here's the end product. The tin came from the Container Store (aka, Mecca. Omg. Love.)

So why do I have that enormous bag of baking soda, you ask? Probably because baking soda is the best thing on the PLANET. I use it for everything. I especially like to use it old-school-style as a cleanser, and I was going to make myself a little shaker out of a mason jar, but then I found this.

Squished a black widow in the kitchen. Apparently it was a juvenile, as it had lighter stripes on its legs, and red markings on its back. Wasn't really sure it was a black widow, but it looked sinister, so I swallowed my hippie pride and squished it. Glad I did. Sorry, babe, but you can't hang out on my oven drawer.

Bunny hutch is done! Bunny escaped because I just butted his cages up together... oops. He hasn't figured out the second storey yet.




I've also been moving like crazy ...

In tragic news, moved the chickens to a friend's wooded lot... did not fix the door.



Something ate through the bungee cord. Louise, you will be missed. Thelma is going to be heartbroken.

Hello Everyone! I'm not trying to step on Patricia's toes, but I'm late from Friday! I have a pretty good excuse though, I'm MOVING! Agh! One of my co-workers and I are going to live together as a trial run. She has a big 2 bedroom town house, so I'm moving in to her spare room. If I get my house, she might move in with me, or if we decide we like living together but need more space, we'll look for a bigger place. Exciting stuff. I moved my bed and animals this afternoon, minus one cat, who is hiding SOMEWHERE. No idea where.

My room looks so clean though. It will not look like this for very long...



Last night, instead of actually packing, I worked on my trash find bunny hutch. I pulled this dresser off of the side of the road (actually right in front of my new apartment) and I've been planning on making it into a 2 story bunny condo for Boo Boo. I gutted it, but hadn't done anything to it... I went crazy though, and now it's almost done!



Sorry for the night phone pictures, but, well, it was night. And I was on my phone.

So, the top floor is going to be for food and water, then there's the ramp down. On the bottom floor, I'm going to hide his litter box behind the ramp. I think I've decided to make the bottom totally enclosed with an access door to clean litter and let him out. The top has a flip up screen door for filling up food and water. The back is all chicken wire so he gets plenty of circulation. Everything is cut for the bottom enclosure, but I charged my drill all night without actually having it plugged in :-/ Oops.

In crafty news, I made a CUTE baby set for my friend's adorable baby. I used this
tutorial, which was super-easy.



Next time I think I'll try to make the lining separate so that there are no interior seams, but we'll see. With the leftovers (all of this was from 2 fat quarters), I made ruffles for the neckline of a onesie too.



Oh baby stuff. Love it.

I also made a ruffled shirt for myself, out of two $3 shirts from Meijer. It was just a practice, but next time I'll measure the layers better. I still like it though!

In fun news, I got a hilarious picture of my porcelain crab riding a conch. He's a trooper. Yeee Haw!!

What day is it anyway?

Hey, y'all!

It's been a busy week here in the Bluegrass! I've switched schedules to third shift because work is just insane, and now I'm off Fridays and Saturdays (although I'm working and it's Saturday... what gives!) All this craziness means I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT DAY IT IS EVER. So please excuse my 12 hour tardy posting. I'll try to get better.

So this week has been pretty tame, as far as the night shift goes. I've gotten a lot of time to just sit around and craft and talk to people, pretty much my favorite things. Some things I've worked on:





I've made a lot of wash cloths. I actually made two of these, and finished another one I had started a while ago in an organic cotton, which is deeelish. These are a cotton/acrylic Cascade, and I really like it. They wash well too.





I made a rag ball with some of the scraps from my men's shirt dishtowel project. I'll add more too it, and hopefully make a rug. I know I cut out more napkins and dish towels (I have one set out of 4 completed), but I honestly can't find them right now... Time to clean I guess.





This morning, I took my frustrations out on making paper mache teacups. At least the bones are put together. I'll paper mache it when I get home. It's been de-sensitized, for your safety, according to the picture ;-)

In un-crafty but still home-y news, a co-worker and I are thinking about moving in together next month. I've been going through home buying classes and applying for a mortgage, but it's a tough time to have almost no credit lines open :-/ Just in case I get rejected *again*, Codename L and I went and looked at two apartments in Lexington last night, and fell in love with this kitchen





It's a 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath in a great location, and he was only a little shocked by the number of cats (we told him we each had two pets to make it seem a little less like I'm a crazy cat lady.) It's definitely at the top of our budget, but it's lovely.




Crown moulding, FTW. It also has a garage!? The landlord said he would hold it for us if we put the deposit down, and he wouldn't list it until he hear yay or nay from us, which should be as soon as I hear back from the bank reviewing my loan! Unfortunately, I couldn't bring the chickens with me, but I think I might have a place to keep them at a friend's house in exchange for oodles of eggs :-) FINGERS CROSSED ON EVERYTHING, either house or apartment!!
